Check Fraud: Protect Your Money from Scammers
Even in today’s digital age, checks are still widely used and unfortunately, still targeted by fraudsters. Check fraud occurs when someone illegally uses your check or bank account information to steal money. There are a few common types:
-
Stolen Checks: Someone takes a check from your checkbook and uses it without your permission.
-
Altered Checks: A legitimate check is changed; such as the amount or the payee’s name without your knowledge.
-
Counterfeit Checks: A completely fake check is created using your bank account information, often appearing almost identical to a real one.
How to protect yourself:
-
Regularly monitor your bank statements and check check images for suspicious activity.
-
Keep your checks in a secure location and never leave them lying around.
-
Only share your account information with trusted parties.
-
Report lost, stolen, or suspicious checks immediately to your bank.
Check fraud can happen to anyone, but a little awareness and routine vigilance can save you a lot of headaches.
