Protect Yourself from Coronavirus Scams

Scam artists are taking advantage of fears surrounding coronavirus (COVID-19) and we remind you to be cautious and aware of scams that may put you at risk.

Defend Against Cyber Scams

Northfield Bank urges you to remain vigilant for cyber scams, especially those related to coronavirus (COVID-19).  Scammers may send you emails with dangerous attachments or links to fraudulent websites to trick victims into revealing sensitive information or donating to fraudulent charities or causes.

We encourage customers to remain vigilant and take the following precautions.

    • Avoid clicking on links in unsolicited emails and be wary of email attachments.
    • Do not reveal personal or financial information by email, and do not respond to email solicitations requesting personal information.
    • Verify a charity’s legitimacy before making donations.
    • Ignore online offers or investment opportunities for vaccinations. There currently are no vaccines, pills, lotions, or other prescription or over-the-counter products available to treat or cure coronavirus (COVID-19) — online or in stores.
    • Use trusted sources for up-to-date information about coronavirus, such as the Center for Disease Control (CDC).

Large Cash Withdrawals

Northfield Bank advises against making large cash withdrawals.  Northfield Bank is a well-capitalized institution and your money is federally insured by the FDIC up to $250,000

Withdrawing large sums of cash also raises safety concerns.  If others become aware of these large cash withdrawals, you are potentially exposing yourself to robbery or harm.  Also, cash that is destroyed by fire or other means is not covered by FDIC insurance and may not be covered by other types of insurance (i.e. homeowners).
